Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay learned to love art from her grandmother Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through artwork. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her youth, however she would spend every summer with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still in the college. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was given and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
